I traveled to Kansas City for the first time last summer and since, have fallen hard for it's funky streets and artsy flair. My best friend, Hannah, attends the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) and she showed me around for a weekend when I visited. My favorite area was the beloved Crossroads Arts District. Kansas City participates in a monthly "First Friday" celebration, where people are encouraged to attend events and have fun! The Crossroad District is the center of the openings and livelihood.

From left to right: a street view, YJ's Snack Bar on 18th St., the front of Birdie's
Birdie's Panties & Swim Boutique is a gem. This independent lingerie shop owned by artist Peregrine Honig* curates a collection of bras and panties (and other lust-worthy things) from small designer brands. Hannah's good friend works at Birdies, so I got a little tour of the dressing rooms, which make you feel like a princess with their velvet curtains and wall-to-wall mirrors. Down the street there's Oracle: Fine Curiosities, which is worth a visit. The beautiful storefront is decked in all sorts of taxidermy, minerals, and a deep smell of incense. You can shop for skulls, pelts, and talismen as surprising but alluring gifts for friends. For a quick bite, there's YJ's Snack Bar, an eclectic spot that only serves one dish per meal per day.
In a nearby alleyway, there's a collection of clothing and jewelry shops. I would highly recommend Shop Future, where I bought my favorite pair of high-waisted jeans.
* Fun fact: At 22 years old, Honig was the youngest living artist to have work acquired by the Whitney Museum of Art. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peregrine_Honig)

If you have a spare minute, Kansas City's Union Station is a step back in time. The interior is well-taken care of and a great display of tile-work and architecture.
There are tons and tons of antique and vintage shops to mill through in KC, so I won't mention any specific ones, but there are to definitely enough to keep you busy.
If you like vinyl, stop by Mills Record Company. It's a neat space and they have a good selection.

And lastly, you have got to try Shatto Milk Company's flavored milks. Uniquely from Kansas City, they come in a variety of flavors such as Root Beer, Banana, and Chocolate. You can pick them up at local grocery stores. Keep the cute reusable bottle!
